Welcome 2014! And Welcome Back To Cascade Bluff!

Welcome back to Kathy and Val's New World At Cascade Bluff! Several holidays, extremely important events, wild weather and many months have passed since my last post... but the bee on the milkweed plant is FINALLY gone!

First, Merry Christmas 2013 to everyone....

Let's start with a brief recap of events since that last post in .... yikes!! September!  Well, the main thing was that we got married! Yes, we are finally legal and our home state finally changed their laws to reflect the reality of the New World. I am still trying to decide whether to post all sorts of wedding related stuff on this blog or not, but for now, for those interested, click here
to see a photo album of our extremely special day.

...and now let's go back to The Bluff as we know it Right Now -- The Deep Mid Winter of 2013-2014!
So far the winter of 2013-2014 has been... amazing.
All this white stuff has already fallen.. and this pic is from only late December. Keeping in mind that MInnesota's snowiest month is usually MARCH... just a bit daunting...
...and all this snow has been accompanied by seriously cold weather... days and days in a row of below zero HIGHS. And that electronic thermometer? Doesn't work. "Offline"

Our usual costumes for the time being... No that isn't a beard, I am wearing a brown, fuzzy scarf! But the matching sweatshirts read "Bad Girls of The North" and we certainly are!

If you've bothered to click the link above, you'll see several VERY different scenes in these exact spots!
Looks like we won't be in the hot tub very soon... um... where'd the hot tub go, honey?
...now this is interesting... used to be a long line of people waiting to use our spiffy new outhouse....where'd they all go?...
Gotta love the sauna when the temps get down to sub-minus 20...
...that is, if you can get to it through the snow...
...Finally getting close! Now we just have to stoke that stove...
These are visitors from outer space who are wearing pointy hats... no, really, they are! They were complaining loudly about how friggin' cold it is on this planet...

...well, okay. Not aliens in pointy hats. Just cedar stumps. Watch closely, and you will see the incredible... vanishing...
...fire pit!! No fires planned for a few months... make that until August...
Where the heck are we going to put all this snow?
But thank goodness the solar PV panels work no matter how cold it gets...
This is why we call this stairway "The Summer Entrance"...

Okay, 'nuf with the complaining. Here is what I really like about winter...
... the wonder of it...
...the deep quiet woods...
...discovering a secret arch in the middle of the silence...
...an arch built by love that not long ago rang with the sound of bells...
...and a magical place...

...where the light is low and the shadows point the way...

...where mystery and love live...
...where people gathered to surround us with their generous hearts and give us their blessing...
...perfectly quietly, perfectly hidden, right in plain sight...
...and the colors of memory cling like softly fading flags...
...fluttering on the edge of thought until the fabric has vanished on the breeze... but the memories will linger even after the last thread is gone...
Just over the next rise another set of memories rise up to greet us...
...where the echoes of music and laughter still linger...
...and some memories are especially priceless... we will cherish them every single day...

...and at Cascade Bluff there is always that light... that awesome magical light.

Welcome back!

  1. Beautiful imagery and sentiment mingle sweetly in another wonderful blog from the snowy north.
Congratulations to Val and Kathy on all they have built and will build together! :-)

  2. Great blog and what a change from the last one! Good to be reminded of the beauty that is winter. Hard to see it commuting on the salt filled highways. If it's as cold there as here you should be making tons of electricity as we know it gets that cold only when it is sunny! Enjoy. Rox

  3. Somebody spent a lot of time placing all of those rocks. It got down to 1' during the recent cold snap here in North Georgia. We almost froze. Again, congratulations on your marriage. G & L

Congrats on the nuptials, I swear, 2014 is the year for me to finally see the cabin after tromping through the woods on the bluff so many years ago.

    1. Hi Tom, nice to hear from you! I don't check the messages on the blog nearly often enough. We are here about half the time, and if you are up north we are here til the 18th of this month. Or, send a message to me via regular email Cascadebluff@gmail.com and we'd love to show you the place! You have quite a stake in it, after all. It would be so fun to see you. Take care, Kathy and Val
