Friend Filled Summer of 2012

Okay, so in no way is it still summer up at the Bluff, what with overnight temps dropping in to the 40s and upper 30s, and with the fall color starting to pop... but more on that later! Right now, I am trying to catch up from being way WAY behind on posting photos from this summer just passed! Other news will soon be forthcoming, as well as the unfolding of fall, our favorite time of year.... But we have to start somewhere, so here goes.

First, we'd like to record this really lovely new rain gauge, complete with perching birds, that we received as a beautiful gift this summer... What an inspiring way to measure the precipitation!
And now an incomplete photo essay of many of the friends who visited this summer...
Chris and Cameron

Writing buddy and dear friend, Rita...

Fantastic neighbors back in the big city, Mike and Martha... we had a fun sailing adventure on The Big Lake, on the sailing ship The Hjordis...

Val's dear friend and fellow board member, Gayle... Gayle was generous with her gardening advice and help for Kathy, and was able to put the concept of "clay soil" into perspective, as she hails from North Carolina where they really have clay soil!

We had a fun invasion by the Smith Clan of San Diego and Thunder Bay...

...more Smiths looking down from above...

Old friends Michele and Dawn stayed with us for a couple of days...

...and we went to the nearby State Park, Cascade River St Park... here are the famous and photogenic falls...

...and Michele and Dawn on top of Lookout Mountain, with The Big Lake in the background...

...for those of you who complain that we don't post enough pix of ourselves, here's one of us taken up on Lookout Mountain...

 ...and the Four Hikers together...

Now, Lookout Mountain is inside the Cascade River State Park, just to the south and west of us. From our cabin we are pretty sure we know which ridge is Lookout Mtn... and from Lookout Mtn, we now know that you can see out place, if you know right where to look! (And have a good set of binocs!!)
Here is the view from Lookout Mountain, pointing north and slightly east... The tallest "hump" on the left is what's called "Cascade Mountain" around here... then on the ridge to the right...

...if you know exactly where to look...

...and then you digitally enlarge your faint, blurry image, you can see our cabin!!  Well, you can sort of see our cabin....

A few friends wouldn't get in front of the camera this year., so if you don't see your picture here and you visited this summer, it's not our fault! You either hid from the camera, we forgot to take your picture, or the cat ate it... Our friend Sue was one of those who didn't stand still long enough on this trip for me to get a photo of her. But she took these pix for us! Here is Val and Kathy posing inside "The Cat"...

I suppose we should explain... our road builder and friend, Dean, has left his Caterpillar at the base of our road each year for 2 years, full of gas, ready to go to work... Pretty soon we should start charging him rent... But then, as another friend recently said, (wisely), you need your road builder up here lots more than he needs you, so if he wants to park his old Cat on your land... you go right ahead and let him...

Besides, Val's thinking of learning how to drive this baby! Looks like fun!

And Rosie has to have the last word on this posting... She's tired of having to share air space with all these people! And tonight, she's demanding that we order a pizza from the world famous local pizza shop, "Sven and Ole's"...

Very soon more news from the north woods... lots of adventures in motorized mayhem, mysterious projects carved from the forest, the last of the season's vegetable treasures, and all the other mischief that we've been getting into this year... Stay tuned!
