Welcome, Elf... Merry Christmas To All... and especially Rosie...

It's the day after Christmas at Cascade Bluff in beautiful Grand Marais, Minnesota. We had very soft gentle flakes of snow falling on Christmas Day, a sky that looked like sun might have peeked out for us (and our batteries) but decided not to, and mmm....
waffles for breakfast!

This sorta blurry photo is my attempt to capture the strings of lights on our deck at night...
(no tripod... too cold to stand out there...)
Our friend Mary Swenson gave us a nice idea this year: to start a tradition for Cascade Bluff of "The Elf on the Shelf."  This is a kid's book, complete with Elf, who, according to the story, appears on your shelf and reports to Santa, you know, all that naughty and nice stuff, coals in the stocking if you aren't good, blah blah blah... (he needs a name,  by the way, and we are open to suggestions...)

Well, we decided to give our new Elf a tour of Our New World At Cascade Bluff. He started in the kitchen, warming up his butt near the stove...

He likes our new vase from Mexico... He's a fan of Starbucks, too...

He appears to not be intimidated by either Godzilla or Nunzilla.... Obviously didn't go to Catholic grade school, or Nunzilla would scare the crap out of him...
Just hanging around in the evening...
...meeting a couple of new friends...
...having a look at Saturn's rings...
...checking out our latest refrigerator magnets...
These are the ones I can safely post on the blog...
It's Christmas, after all... Wait, uh, are those stockings both empty?? Damned Elf's already been reporting on us to Santa...
Oh well, we can always play some "Angry Birds", the Holiday Edition....

This season of the year, now is the time for the sun to go down...

More hanging out... we do that alot up here...

Sittin' by the window... No, he's not getting a sitz bath, he's perched on a glass bowl...

He found the basket of trail maps and nature guides we keep on the shelf...

I think he really likes that reindeer....

But I believe the Duckies overwhelmed him a little...

The Elf went along when we found our Christmas tree and cut it down...

...And after a long day's work he joined us for a spell in the hot tub... He claimed to be afraid of the hot water.... little wimp...

But then, Rosie discovered our new guest....

"...mmm...nom nom nom....
 Elf feets, I likes them..."
Rosie is very friendly...

Kickboxing match: Rosie, 1, Elf, 0...

Alexander is MUCH nicer...The Elf really likes him too...Almost as much as that reindeer...
Um... Alex, where'd the Elf go?
"Elf? What Elf?"
A few more new friends, the usual suspects (blue footed booby, sandhill crane, Elf, peregrin falcon, brown pelican, pileated woodpecker... etc...)

Enough about the blasted Elf, Rosie says. What about me? This is my first Christmas! I demand some more air time!!! Okay, what Rosie want's, Rosie gets...
Here's Rosie helping Val make gingersnaps on Christmas Eve...

Here's Rosie sneaking up on the Christmas tree, planning her attack....
...Got it!... "Rosie, get DOWN!!"...
As of today, the 26th, the tree survives, the Elf survives, Rosie and Alex are still with us, and we are continuing to enjoy the deep midwinter up on Cascade Bluff. Merry Christmas to All! (but especially to Rosie!)

  1. It looks like the Elf was living the good life, at least until he encountered Rosie...

    Enjoy!

  2. Very interesting adventures for your elf! How about Gulliver for a name? Or Columbus? Or Homer?
