February Firsts

Welcome back to 556 Cascade Bluffs! We've just returned from a weekend of February firsts in our New World: our first meal, our first sunset and sunrise, our first overnight! But first, some new pix from the place to show off the progress that is being made despite Winter's continued grip on Cook County, MN...

Here's us unloading the Jeep... door's open!
There are all sorts of layers on the outside of the place: SIPs, extruded polystyrene, the SIP wrap, some mesh, then the pine siding with the jaunty green trim...

Upstairs looking south, work is proceeding slowly...

...but downstairs things are shaping up nicely...

Here are a few photos of the fading afternoon before we go indoors. The temperature was really pleasant... we were briefly tempted to pitch a tent... Nahhhh...

Inside the cabin, sheetrock is going up all over.
Val's getting a fire going in our teensy wood stove...

Here's a shot, end-on, of one of our 'bull-nose" corners.

The loft timbers are gorgeous, aren't they?

Our very first meal in the cabin: a nice aged Gouda, Kathy's home made bread, water heating for soup, and a wee splash...

Life's essentials, and a good book about someone else who built a dream place in the woods...

Then the sky started showing off for us. Not much to say that pictures won't say a lot better...

We hunkered down after finishing our soup for a gentle evening...

The Reading Nook...

We don't have running water yet, so a visit to the great outdoors was necessary. A clear night... a new moon on Feb 13th, and look up! Wow! Even with my little "point and shoot" and no tripod, this is a shot of a gazillion stars...

Back inside, nighty night!

Breakfast is served (instant coffee in the thermos and leftover bread... )

A bright winter morning up on Cascade Bluff!

We're very pleased at how things are shaping up, and hope to visit again very soon. We might not post again until March 1 or so, 'cause we'll be at Bearskin Lodge for a real getaway.. no cell phone service, no internet, and for a while this winter they had no land lines... sounds fabulous! So check back in March for the newest progress on the New World at Cascade Bluffs...

New Siding

Although the weather has been pretty chilly, our guys up in Grand Marais are still working hard. Here is Nick with some of our new siding, rough-sawn pine in a board-and-batten style...

...our nice green trim...

...and a peek at the lower floor on the south side beneath the big Western Larch timbers.

We think it looks really great! We will be up to check it all out and spend the night in a week or two so please keep checking the blog for updates and photos!
