Settling In

The weekend of June 5 and 6 started with a mysterious scene. Where'd the lake go?
The Land of the Foggy Foggy Dew... (for fans of "Once Upon A Mattress..."

But the rest of the weekend was gorgeous and bright, allowing us to spread crown vetch and bird's-foot trefoil for ground cover in front of the place... Hope it sprouts...

We have a functioning, hooked up generator... And we know how to start it...
The interior stairs are coming along beautifully...

...and soon there will be stairs on the outside leading to the west deck...

Healy stopped by to finish up some peg work on the timber frame... Here he is with peg in hand.

Speaking of pegs, we found this coat rack with monster pegs... AKA railroad spikes!

Jim Kalb stopped by to touch up some dings in the clay walls. Here are the containers of leftover clay for future dings and bangs...

Kinda looks like a huge tub of mustard...

The clay texture, close up...

And some pix of interior details as things get settled in. Mexican pots on the sill...

A raku pot we bought from Kristi Dowling, a local potter from east of Grand Marais, at last year's "Crossing Borders" artists' festival...

The pot in its place on the sill, showing off the wood and clay walls...

Our latest light fixtures! These are aged tin sconces from Mexico...

...really looking fun and funky when lit in the evening...

Val relaxing on a cool evening...

...by the fire...

And here is our Inukshuk. The First Nations people up in the Hudson Bay area build these out on the tundra as way markers (much bigger than this little gal) and, legend has it, as friendly companions for travelers who have long ways to go. They are supposed to help mark the way forward, so we thought this Lady Inukshuk needed to be up at Kathy and Val's New World at Cascade Bluff, helping us look to the future!
