Headin' North

Just like the geese, we headed north on May 27...
We rented a U-Haul... Complete with snakes painted on the sides... Who knows why...
Here she is, packed and ready...

We got ourselves a convoy! Val and Kathy are in the VW van following Keith, Val's brother, the volunteer driver of the big monster truck with the "gentle ride"... (not.)

It was so exciting getting the U haul, the VW van and the Jeep all the way in on our long access road, the long "driveway" and our final steep hill, that I forgot to take pictures for a while. Things got movin' quickly, the construction crew dropped their hammers and paintbrushes and jumped in to help unload. Lickedy-split, there were piles of things all over the place!

THursday afternoon we paused for a brief celebration, with a bit of bubbly...

Next day, Superior proved that our view has not changed...

For those who don't like the deck with no railing, the steel cables have arrived and will soon be in place -- no more fear of heights.

We found these great red cedar Adirondack chairs at the Amish Furniture Haus on Hwy 61 just outside Duluth. Wow, are they comfy!

And here are a couple more, painting in process, to match the trim...

The weekend was gorgeous, and we started straightening things out indoors and taking breaks to enjoy the fantastic weather and great friends...

Our first cook out...

Dave and Meredith Homans, our immediate neighbors to the north at Cascade Bluff and the first friends to join us for a meal at the new place...

Now, for a photo update of some of the details that are new since the last posting...
Nice exterior lights...

Inside, floor one: the Mistress Bedroom, with a new bed and a bedspread from Guatemala...

A new use for an old rug...

The first floor bath, all bright and shiny...

Matching towels... As you see, one detail to come is the cabinet and drawer fronts...
We were in Albuquerque in January visiting dear friends Janet and Kathleen, and we can't seem to escape New Mexico without a rug. This is our latest ...

New light fixtures in the stairwell...

The kitchen, starting to really shape up...

I've been meaning to include a photo of the famous "spice box" from Zanzibar, on which I patterned the tiles in the upstairs bathroom... Here is the original...

...and the tile-accented bathroom...

There will be cool breezes...

...and light streaming in...

The stair to the loft is coming along...

Guest quarters... Notice the carpet is in...
Dining room...

Dining room light...

The living room, from above...

Very cozy! And almost all of the furniture is stuff we've had tucked away in attics and back rooms. There's the futon, ready for more guests...

Outdoor adventures and trail maintenance got our attention too. Did you all know we have two smart looking vehicles up on Cascade Bluff? The ATV is Keith's, and we are trying it out...

Here is a nice rock cairn marking the entry to our cleared trail to the river (still a work in progress, but better and better all the time.)

And the rock cairn marks the road to the future! We had a blast, could hardly tear ourselves away to return to the Cities and "the real world" and can't wait to get back to our New World!
