The Gorgeous North Shore

Stupendously beautiful color this year! We wanted to share some of the peak leaf color we've been seeing up on our property and on the drive up to our land. WOW!

We've Got Walls!

Chris Norman, our fabulous builder, and crew, are making progress. Here are Chris's photos from today....

Here is the first floor, and the big white slabs that look like giant ice cream sandwiches are SIPs: Structural Insulated Panels. They are two panels of OSB (oriented strand board, the new jargon for something like plywood) and a thick slab of foam insulation. Ours are 8 inches thick...

The struts that will support the second floor...and there's that view again...

Views from inside the first floor, with some of the timbers that we carved in Montana!

And here's Nick, superhero, tree-lover and great carpenter
demonstrating that our structure stands up!

We're heading to Grand Marais ourselves in 48 hours, and we hear that the leaves are nearly at color peak, so expect more photos very soon!

We have racks on the garage roof for our photovoltaic solar panels...

...an 8 inch deep layer of insulation and tubes for in-floor heat...

...sonotubes (round concrete posts to support the timbers that will support the decks)...

...newly planed timbers for our first floor...

...and the slab is ready to be poured! And that's the way it is*...

Movin' On Up!

The weather up in Grand Marais was absolutely stunning on Labor Day Weekend. We watched the sun rise over Lake Superior every morning.... Ahhhh....

We explored our property and found some wonderful places to peek out at the views to the north and east, where Cascade River flows over a corner of our land.

We saw the first signs of autumn...

And progress is being made at Kathy and Val's New World. We now have a foundation and a well! Here are some recent photos from the adventure.

Some of the latest recycled timbers, which will be posts for floor one...

Our ridge beam for floor one, carved, wrapped and waiting installation...

We have got a well!! That means running water, kids!

The foundation is shaping up, with insulated concrete forms on the footings (see previous posts), some plumbing of the future, and a wrapping on the outside to keep out cold air.
The foundation is moving on up, with footings on bedrock, ICF's on footings, insulation and fill, and next will be the slab... may already be poured!

Our nieces, Marissa and Jessica, some of our very first visitors to our new cabin! They looking out over the future patio off our bedroom. Nice view, eh Jess?
